Spotlight Effect

Have you ever tripped while walking in public and felt the gaze of everyone around you? But in reality, nobody even noticed. Well that is the spotlight effect. You tend to believe that you are getting all this attention due to something. We perceive the world around us with ourselves at the center of it. And in these circumstances it is very hard to accurately evaluate other people's perceptions on you. It is a common tendency over-estimate this.

Too much of this and it can lead to anxiety issues and can foster an inability to perform under any sort of pressure. The spotlight effect can skew your judgements and the way you set up your personal value system. Spotlight effect is driven by another bias known as Anchoring. Anchoring is a concept in behavioural economics which describes how we rely heavily on the information fed to us early on affects the decision we make.
